The Mid-Currituck Bridge is a proposed bridge that would connect the mainland of Currituck County, NC, to the northern Outer Banks of Corolla. The bridge will span the Currituck Sound and provide a direct route for motorists traveling to and from Corolla, bypassing the current route through Kitty Hawk and Duck. The idea of the bridge has been discussed for many years as a way to alleviate traffic congestion during peak tourist seasons. Currently, the only way to access the northern beaches of Corolla and Carova is by crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge, which is heavily congested during the summer months, from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Proponents of the Mid-Currituck Bridge argue that it would improve access to Corolla, reduce travel times, and stimulate economic growth in the region. They believe the bridge would attract more visitors to the area and make it easier for residents and businesses to travel to and from the mainland. It could also provide more opportunities for year-round residents and easier access to Currituck County schools for those residents.
However, there are also many concerns and opposition to the bridge. Critics argue that it could negatively impact the environment, disrupt wildlife habitats, and change the character of the peninsula. The 7-mile toll bridge project is quoted at $500 million dollars and concerns of where the funding will come from have arisen.
As of now, the Mid-Currituck Bridge is still in the planning and approval stages, but they have passed several legal hurdles this year and it is seemingly becoming a more realistic possibility of its construction despite more litigation that is bound to come its way. Environmental impact studies and public hearings have been conducted, and the project has received some funding from the state of NC. However, there is still no definite timeline for construction or final approval of design or development of permit applications.
